At Oklahoma Center for Disc Replacement, we help patients like you get their lives back. Our board-certified surgeons offer prodisc® Total Disc Replacement — a motion-preserving alternative to spinal fusion that has helped thousands of patients return to the activities they love.
If you've been living with chronic neck or back pain, you know how much it takes from you — your mobility, your sleep, your relationships, your joy. prodisc® disc replacement was designed with patients like you in mind.
Disc degeneration doesn’t just cause pain — it steals your independence. Simple things like turning your head while driving, picking up your grandchildren, or sleeping through the night become daily struggles. The prodisc® Total Disc Replacement system is designed to restore the natural movement of your spine and give you that independence back.
Traditional spinal fusion permanently locks vertebrae together — and while it can relieve pain, it eliminates natural movement at that level and can place extra stress on surrounding discs over time. prodisc® disc replacement is different. It replaces the damaged disc with a device that moves like a healthy disc, preserving the motion your body depends on while significantly reducing pain.
In a 7-year FDA clinical study, patients who chose prodisc® disc replacement retained an average of 8.12° of range of motion — compared to just 0.66° in fusion patients. More importantly, they reported significantly higher satisfaction scores and were far less likely to need additional surgery. These aren’t just statistics — they represent real patients living fuller, more active lives.
Find Out If You're a Candidate
Watch our spine specialists explain who qualifies for prodisc® Total Disc Replacement and what patients can expect from the procedure and recovery.
Many of our patients spent years trying to manage their pain before finding us. If any of the following sounds familiar, it may be time for a conversation with our team.
We know that considering spine surgery can feel overwhelming. Our team is with you every step of the way — making sure you feel informed, supported, and confident from the moment you reach out to us.
When you choose Oklahoma Center for Disc Replacement, you're not getting an experimental procedure. You're getting the most clinically studied artificial disc in the world, implanted by surgeons who are certified and experienced in this specific technique.
Think of prodisc® like a hip or knee replacement — but for your spine. It's made from the same trusted materials used in joint replacements for decades: a durable metal shell that bonds to your bone, and a smooth inner piece that lets the joint move naturally. The result is a spine that moves the way it's supposed to.
We know you have questions — and we want to make sure you have the answers you need to feel confident about your decision.
For most neck (cervical) disc replacements, the procedure takes about 1 to 2 hours. Lower back (lumbar) procedures may take 2 to 4 hours. You will be under general anesthesia, so you will be completely asleep and comfortable throughout. A large study of nearly 7,000 patients confirmed that disc replacement patients go home significantly sooner than fusion patients — many cervical patients go home the same day.
Most major insurance plans — including Medicare and many Medicaid plans — do cover disc replacement when your condition meets their medical necessity requirements. Our team will work with your insurance before your procedure to understand your coverage and help you navigate the process. We want to make sure cost is not a barrier to getting the relief you need.
Recovery time depends on what kind of work you do and whether your procedure was on your neck or lower back. Most patients with desk jobs are back to work within 2 to 4 weeks after a cervical procedure, and 4 to 6 weeks after a lumbar procedure. If your job involves physical labor, it may take 3 to 4 months. Your surgeon will give you a personalized timeline based on your specific situation — not a one-size-fits-all answer.
For patients who are good candidates, the clinical evidence strongly favors disc replacement. A 7-year FDA study showed that prodisc® patients were 4 times less likely to need a second surgery, had 4 times fewer problems at neighboring disc levels, and retained far more natural movement than fusion patients. That said, fusion is still the better choice for some patients — those with severe instability, certain bone conditions, or other factors. Our surgeons will give you an honest recommendation based on your individual situation, not a one-size-fits-all answer.
This is one of the most common questions patients ask, and it is completely understandable. The prodisc® implant is made from the same materials used in hip and knee replacements — materials that have been trusted in the human body for decades. In the entire 7-year FDA clinical study, not a single prodisc® implant migrated or was expelled. Long-term follow-up studies out to 10 years show that the vast majority of patients maintain their results with very low revision rates. The implant is designed to last your lifetime.
Having a prior fusion does not automatically disqualify you. In fact, some patients come to us specifically because their fusion has placed extra stress on a neighboring disc — a condition known as adjacent segment disease. Depending on your situation, disc replacement at that adjacent level may be a viable option. Every case is different, and our surgeons will review your history carefully to give you an honest answer about what is possible for you.
Taking the first step is often the hardest part. Our team makes it easy — just give us a call or fill out the form and we'll reach out to schedule your consultation. There's no obligation, no pressure. Just an honest conversation about your options and what relief could look like for you.
