There Is a Better Path to Relief

If you've been living with chronic neck or back pain, you know how much it takes from you — your mobility, your sleep, your relationships, your joy. prodisc® disc replacement was designed with patients like you in mind.

Disc degeneration doesn’t just cause pain — it steals your independence. Simple things like turning your head while driving, picking up your grandchildren, or sleeping through the night become daily struggles. The prodisc® Total Disc Replacement system is designed to restore the natural movement of your spine and give you that independence back.

Traditional spinal fusion permanently locks vertebrae together — and while it can relieve pain, it eliminates natural movement at that level and can place extra stress on surrounding discs over time. prodisc® disc replacement is different. It replaces the damaged disc with a device that moves like a healthy disc, preserving the motion your body depends on while significantly reducing pain.

In a 7-year FDA clinical study, patients who chose prodisc® disc replacement retained an average of 8.12° of range of motion — compared to just 0.66° in fusion patients. More importantly, they reported significantly higher satisfaction scores and were far less likely to need additional surgery. These aren’t just statistics — they represent real patients living fuller, more active lives.

Find Out If You're a Candidate

Hear From Our Surgeons About Disc Replacement

Watch our spine specialists explain who qualifies for prodisc® Total Disc Replacement and what patients can expect from the procedure and recovery.

You May Be a Candidate If You Recognize Yourself Here

Many of our patients spent years trying to manage their pain before finding us. If any of the following sounds familiar, it may be time for a conversation with our team.

Chronic Neck or Back Pain
You've been dealing with persistent pain for months or years. Maybe it's gotten worse over time, or maybe it just won't go away no matter what you try. Degenerative disc disease is one of the most common reasons patients come to us — and one of the conditions prodisc® was designed to treat.
Pain, Tingling, or Numbness in Your Arms
If you're feeling shooting pain, tingling, or weakness that travels from your neck down into your arms or hands, a compressed nerve root may be the cause. This is called cervical radiculopathy — and it's one of the most common conditions we treat successfully with disc replacement.
A Herniated or Bulging Disc
A herniated disc can feel like your pain came out of nowhere — and it can be debilitating. When the inner disc material pushes through and presses on nearby nerves, it can cause intense pain, weakness, and loss of function. Disc replacement removes the problem at its source.
You Want Your Active Life Back
You don't want to just manage pain — you want to get back to the activities that make life worth living. Whether that's playing with your kids, working your job, or simply going for a walk without wincing. In a study of military personnel, 83% of prodisc® patients returned to full unrestricted duty — vs. 67% after fusion.
You're Worried About Future Problems
Many patients are concerned that spine surgery today means more surgery down the road. It's a valid worry — spinal fusion can accelerate wear on nearby discs. prodisc® disc replacement was designed to reduce that risk. Patients had 4× fewer adjacent level disease cases than those who chose fusion.
Prior Treatment
You've Tried Everything Else
You've done the physical therapy, taken the medications, maybe even had injections. And you're still in pain. If conservative treatments haven't given you the relief you need after 6 or more weeks, it may be time to explore whether disc replacement is right for you.

What Patients Experience With prodisc®

01
Move the Way You Were Meant To
Fusion locks your spine. prodisc® preserves your natural movement. In a 7-year clinical study, patients retained an average of 8.12° of motion at the treated level — compared to just 0.66° in fusion patients. That difference shows up in your everyday life.
02
Protect Your Spine Long-Term
One of the biggest concerns patients have is whether surgery today leads to more surgery tomorrow. prodisc® patients had 4× fewer adjacent level disease cases than fusion patients at 7 years — meaning your spine stays healthier for longer.
03
Get Home Faster, Recover Sooner
Nobody wants to spend more time in the hospital than necessary. A study of nearly 7,000 patients confirmed that prodisc® disc replacement patients had significantly shorter hospital stays than fusion patients — so you can get back to your family, your home, and your life sooner.
04
A Treatment You Can Trust
Choosing surgery is a big decision. prodisc® gives you confidence — it's backed by 540+ peer-reviewed studies, 30+ years of global use, and data on more than 13,000 patients. This isn't experimental. It's the most clinically studied artificial disc in the world.
05
Engineered to Feel Natural
prodisc® is built to move the way a healthy disc moves — with a fixed center of rotation that mimics your spine's natural mechanics. Patients often describe the result as finally feeling like themselves again.
06
Patients Are Glad They Did It
At 5-year follow-up, 82.5% of prodisc® patients said they would choose the surgery again. Patient satisfaction scored 85.81 out of 100 at 7 years. When patients are asked if it was worth it — the answer is overwhelmingly yes.

From Your First Call to Getting Your Life Back

We know that considering spine surgery can feel overwhelming. Our team is with you every step of the way — making sure you feel informed, supported, and confident from the moment you reach out to us.

1
A Conversation About Your Pain
Your first visit is about listening. We want to understand your symptoms, your history, and what you've already tried. Your surgeon will review your imaging and give you an honest assessment of your options — with no pressure.
2
An Honest Assessment of Your Options
Not everyone is a candidate for disc replacement — and we'll tell you honestly if another approach is better for you. If you are a candidate, your surgeon will explain exactly what the procedure involves and what you can expect to feel afterward.
3
The Procedure Itself
The surgery is performed under general anesthesia through a small incision. The damaged disc is carefully removed and replaced with the prodisc® implant, which is designed to restore normal movement. Most procedures take 1–2 hours for cervical cases.
4
Waking Up & Going Home
Many of our cervical disc replacement patients go home the same day as surgery. You'll be up and walking within hours. Lumbar patients typically stay one night. Our care team will make sure you're comfortable and confident before you leave.
5
Getting Back to Your Life
Recovery from disc replacement is typically faster than fusion. Most patients return to desk work within 2–4 weeks and full activity within 3–6 months. We'll be with you through physical therapy and every follow-up — celebrating your progress along the way.

Why We Use prodisc® — And Why It Matters for You

When you choose Oklahoma Center for Disc Replacement, you're not getting an experimental procedure. You're getting the most clinically studied artificial disc in the world, implanted by surgeons who are certified and experienced in this specific technique.

Built to Move Like a Healthy Disc

Think of prodisc® like a hip or knee replacement — but for your spine. It's made from the same trusted materials used in joint replacements for decades: a durable metal shell that bonds to your bone, and a smooth inner piece that lets the joint move naturally. The result is a spine that moves the way it's supposed to.

The Most Trusted Device of Its Kind: With 540+ published research studies and data covering over 13,000 real patients, prodisc® has more clinical evidence behind it than any other artificial disc. When you choose prodisc®, you're choosing a treatment that has been studied, tested, and proven over 30 years.
Designed to Protect the Rest of Your Spine: prodisc® moves in a controlled, natural way — just like a healthy disc. This precision matters because it protects the joints and discs around it from extra stress. That's one of the key reasons patients experience fewer problems at neighboring levels compared to fusion.
Your Bone Grows Into It: The surfaces of the prodisc® implant that touch your vertebrae are coated with a porous titanium layer — which your bone naturally grows into over time. This creates a permanent, stable bond. It's not just held in place mechanically; it becomes part of your spine.
Matched to Your Unique Anatomy: No two spines are exactly alike. prodisc® is the only cervical disc system that offers four different designs, giving your surgeon the flexibility to choose the best fit for your specific anatomy. This means a more precise fit, better stability, and better outcomes for you personally.
FDA-Approved — Not Experimental: prodisc® went through the FDA's most rigorous approval process for medical devices before it could be used in the United States. It's approved for both neck and lower back disc replacement — making Centinel Spine the only company with that distinction. You can feel confident this is a well-vetted, proven treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

We know you have questions — and we want to make sure you have the answers you need to feel confident about your decision.

How long does the surgery take? +

For most neck (cervical) disc replacements, the procedure takes about 1 to 2 hours. Lower back (lumbar) procedures may take 2 to 4 hours. You will be under general anesthesia, so you will be completely asleep and comfortable throughout. A large study of nearly 7,000 patients confirmed that disc replacement patients go home significantly sooner than fusion patients — many cervical patients go home the same day.

Will insurance cover disc replacement? +

Most major insurance plans — including Medicare and many Medicaid plans — do cover disc replacement when your condition meets their medical necessity requirements. Our team will work with your insurance before your procedure to understand your coverage and help you navigate the process. We want to make sure cost is not a barrier to getting the relief you need.

How soon can I return to work after surgery? +

Recovery time depends on what kind of work you do and whether your procedure was on your neck or lower back. Most patients with desk jobs are back to work within 2 to 4 weeks after a cervical procedure, and 4 to 6 weeks after a lumbar procedure. If your job involves physical labor, it may take 3 to 4 months. Your surgeon will give you a personalized timeline based on your specific situation — not a one-size-fits-all answer.

Is disc replacement better than spinal fusion? +

For patients who are good candidates, the clinical evidence strongly favors disc replacement. A 7-year FDA study showed that prodisc® patients were 4 times less likely to need a second surgery, had 4 times fewer problems at neighboring disc levels, and retained far more natural movement than fusion patients. That said, fusion is still the better choice for some patients — those with severe instability, certain bone conditions, or other factors. Our surgeons will give you an honest recommendation based on your individual situation, not a one-size-fits-all answer.

Can the artificial disc fail or wear out? +

This is one of the most common questions patients ask, and it is completely understandable. The prodisc® implant is made from the same materials used in hip and knee replacements — materials that have been trusted in the human body for decades. In the entire 7-year FDA clinical study, not a single prodisc® implant migrated or was expelled. Long-term follow-up studies out to 10 years show that the vast majority of patients maintain their results with very low revision rates. The implant is designed to last your lifetime.

What if I've already had a spinal fusion? +

Having a prior fusion does not automatically disqualify you. In fact, some patients come to us specifically because their fusion has placed extra stress on a neighboring disc — a condition known as adjacent segment disease. Depending on your situation, disc replacement at that adjacent level may be a viable option. Every case is different, and our surgeons will review your history carefully to give you an honest answer about what is possible for you.
